A Bolivian conservation organization has created a protected nesting area for a rare endangered parrot.
It is at high risk of extinction, so much so that there are now about 300 specimens of its species. This is why in Bolivia, cradle of the magnificent Ara Glaucogularis parrot, or Blue throated Macaw, it was decided to provide it with an ad hoc protected area.
The conservation organization Asociación Armonía, together with the American Bird Conservancy, the International Conservation Fund of Canada, the IUCN Netherlands and the World Land Trust, have indeed created aprotected nesting area for this rare parrot.
The blue throat macaw originates from a region called “Los Llanos de Moxos”, in the north of Bolivia. Unfortunately, it is currently in rapid extinction due to deforestation, the progressive destruction of its habitat and illegal trade.
It was only last year when an expedition was organized in Bolivia to identify where these parrots breed and nest. And so it was that those associations bought a land of 680 hectares and turned it into a protected nature reserve, in the hope that the bird population would increase.
The new nature reserve is named Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Reserve in homage to Laney Rickman, founder of the Texas-based non-profit Bird Endowment. Rickman supported the new macaw nest program in collaboration with Asociación Armonía.
This new reserve, combined with the organization's Barba Azul nature reserve, creates a total protected area of more than 10 hectares for Blue-throated Macaws.
