In the midst of the pandemic, another scourge is tormenting South America and Argentina in particular. About 40 million locusts have invaded the country, threatening to bring agriculture to its knees.

A cloud of grasshoppers has enveloped Argentina. The National Service for Health and Agri-food Quality (Senasa) has issued a danger alert in several regions. The invasion of these insects has been monitored since May as it has already involved other South American countries.

The insects recently left Paraguay, arriving in the province of Santa Fé on June 17. Notably, the cloud of grasshoppers entered the country via Paraguay over the weekend and is now advancing into the part of Argentine territory that borders Brazil and Uruguay, placing these two countries and Brazil in particular at dangerous risk. , already in very serious difficulty due to the coronavirus.

As the map below shows, the border with the state of Rio Grande do Sul is on high alert for this insect, which is dangerous for both pastures and crops. The pink area is the most at risk, while the yellow one is on alert.

Today the sleeve was detected near Perugorria, #Corrientes.
Around 12:00 p.m., it flew south. Due to the wind forecast, it is likely that starting tomorrow it will enter the province of #EntreRíos. pic.twitter.com/YUVnOxsCQH

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the "cloud" it contains up to 40 million insects per sq km and has traveled about 100 kilometers in a single day driven by the wind. They also travel great distances in search of food and end up doing damage wherever they go, but they are not dangerous to humans. The 40 million locusts can eat what 2.000 cows would consume in a single day.

To date it is impossible to make any predictions. The trajectory of the "cloud" of grasshoppers will depend on the weather conditions in the region. It could move further south, leaving Santa Catarina off the threat route.

In any case, wherever they go they will destroy the crops. In Paraguay, maize crops have been devastated.

“The interdisciplinary teams are working on the territory and are in permanent contact with the producers. At the moment there has been no damage to crops in the province, where a partial control of the pest was carried out on Saturday, ”Senasa said.

It is not the first time that Argentina has come to terms with an invasion of locusts. It had already happened in 2019 and 2017. Unfortunately, locusts are invading many areas of the world, already at risk such as Africa

Africa, the invasion of locusts is really scary. The population with no more food is eating insects

    and Pakistan.
