New life for 35 Asian elephants who, after years spent in a circus, were finally able to savor freedom. The pachyderms were rescued from Ringling and Barnum & Bailey Circus (thankfully closed permanently), where they were forced to perform every day until they were exhausted. The sanctuary will take care of them White Oak Conservation della Florida, managed by a non-profit organization that deals with the conservation of specimens that have lived in captivity.

15 elephants have already arrived in the reserve of approximately 1.010 hectares, while the others will arrive in the next few days. And for the managers of the sanctuary, the moment when the pachyderms saw trees and grasslands was nothing short of exciting.

"Seeing the elephants in their habitat was an incredible moment" - says Nick Newby, who leads the team of experts at the White Oak sanctuary who deal with the welfare of the pachyderms - "I was so happy to see them move together and reassure and comfort each other , just like wild elephants do, and then go out to explore their new environment. Seeing the elephants swimming for the first time was fantastic “.

“We are thrilled to give these elephants a place to roam and explore,” commented philanthropists Mark and Kimbra Walter, who finance the sanctuary. “We are working to protect wild animals in their native habitats. But for these elephants that cannot be rescued, we are happy to offer them a place where they can live comfortably for the rest of their lives. "

To reach the reserve, the elephants made a long journey by truck of over 300 km, but on the way the pachyderms were assisted by veterinarians.

After an initial settlement phase, the elephants were guided towards the immense forest of the reserve. The sanctuary, in fact, houses a rich vegetation with plants, fruit trees, ponds and rivers where elephants can move and finally return to live.
