10 lions were rescued from the breeding farm in South Africa where they were held prisoners waiting to become "trophies" for the so-called "canned hunting", ie hunting on order against wild animals kept in captivity. The photos showing the condition of the lions at the time of liberation are shocking.

A series of shocking images show the moment when 10 lions were rescued from a herd within which they were imprisoned in conditions that were not adequate to their nature. Right there they would soon become prey for unscrupulous trophy hunters, willing to pay a lot of money to kill them and pledge their skins and especially their heads.

Movies and images were shared by Wild@life, a German organization that works in Africa in favor of biodiversity, climate, agriculture and wildlife conservation also with direct actions for the recovery and rescue of animals.

In the case of the lions, the Wild @ life volunteers who rescued them stated:

“The team was overwhelmed to see 10 lions kept in a completely isolated and enclosed shed with no light or grass. We had to fight hard for the lives of these lions. But dedication and passion have made this work a success ".

In fact, the recovery of the lions was not easy. The team traveled around 5.000km to reach the animals and then spent around 10 hours safely removing them from the pen, after making sure they obtained the necessary documents to rescue them.

The lions then had to be reassured before they could be moved.

The images, in fact, speak for themselves and testify to the terrible life these lions led before being saved.

Among them was also a lone lion that was not good enough to be sold as a trophy. It would probably have been the same used for the bone trade or to become part of traditional Asian medicine. The volunteers, of course, couldn't let this happen and rescued him by naming him Georges.

Now the lions are in a sanctuary all together, they live adequately and "They will learn to be lions again" as the volunteers of the German association made known.

The "canned hunting“, Trophy hunting to order, however, remains a very serious problem. Among other things, it is an even more unfair hunt than the traditional one against animals.

As has been evident also in this case, animals are kept in places where they cannot express themselves and their nature at their best, they are treated badly and fed to a minimum, consequently they are also weaker. Furthermore, even when they are "released" to be hunted, they are often found in small fenced areas to facilitate killing by hunters.

As Wild @ life volunteers explained:

“In most cases, lions are kept in small enclosures, confined to horrible places, with limited or no food, extreme stress and no hygienic and veterinary care. A 'hunter' can then choose the lions he wants to kill and conduct the kills in the simplest way, even just by sitting in their vehicle. Animals have no chance. Such structures even put male lions in small enclosures to fight each other, so the lions end up having scars on their faces "

Trophy hunting to order is a rapidly growing activity in South Africa, where thousands of lions are raised on more than 160 farms to be slaughtered by wealthy foreign trophy hunters. There are currently more lions kept in captivity in the country (over 5.000) than those living in the wild (around 2.000).
