Dental health, from the Ministry of Health arrive guidelines for adolescentsi, intended for secondary schools. The idea is to promote information on pathologies that can affect the teeth and oral cavity at school as well.

Il Ministry of Health has prepared a document that takes into account the scientific evidence currently available and which represents a set of useful guidelines for teachers, parents and children.

The material it is aimed above all at teachers who want to deal with the topic of dental health and oral hygiene with their students. However, the guidelines are also suitable for use and presentation outside the school environment, for example in the family or in other situations that see the participation of young people.

The document was elaborated by the experts of the "Technical group on dentistry" of the Ministry of Health and intends to provide a series of indications based on the best scientific evidence to support teachers who intend to tackle the topic of prevention of the main oral diseases with secondary school students.

The guidelines concern lifestyles and some problematic behavior - such asalcohol abuse, smoking, eating disorders, the practice of piercing, theabuse of sweetened drinks - which often arise in adolescence and which are perceived as not risky for health in general and, in particular, for oral health.

Here 10 among the main points of the Ministry's guidelines on dental health:

Index

Healthy nutrition

A healthy eating during childhood and adolescence it is important for development and can prevent, in addition to dental caries, deficiency of important nutrients - such as iron -, obesity and chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes), frequent causes of mortality.

Excess of sugar

Un excess sugar through food and drink, both in terms of quantity and frequency of intake, in the absence of correct oral hygiene, it contributes to the development of carious lesions. Recently, a resurgence of the disease has been found in children, attributable to dietary changes, in particular to a increased consumption of sugars in the absence of exposure to a sufficient amount of fluoride.

Fruits and vegetables

A correct intake of fruits and vegetables, foods rich in vitamins, also contributes to oral health. A diet low in fruit and vegetables can lead to vitamin deficiencies (including vitamin C) which, especially in the absence of good oral hygiene, can facilitate the onset of gum disease.

Foods rich in fiber

To chew high fiber foodsFurthermore, it helps to clean the teeth and stimulate the production of saliva, which contains many healthy substances for the well-being of the dental tissues and increases the pH of the plaque.

Caries

Caries is a pathology that produces a destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel and dentin) Periodontal disease determines, first, an inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and, then, an erosion of the supporting tissues of the teeth and bone

Bacterial plaque

La bacterial plaque it is the main cause of the most frequent diseases of the teeth and their supporting tissues (gums, periodontal ligament and bone): caries and periodontal diseases.

Periodontal disease

Redness and bleeding of the gums, bad breath (halitosis) and the feeling of greater mobility of the teeth are the most frequent symptoms of periodontal disease.

Cardiovascular risk

Periodontitis can increase the risk to develop the first cardiovascular event (such as myocardial ischaemia or stroke), regardless of the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors. The prevention and early treatment of periodontitis therefore plays an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Recent studies show a correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and oral health, particularly with periodontal disease.

Smoking and tumors

THEuse of tobacco, due to the localized development of high temperatures and the direct action of nicotine, causes thickening of the most superficial layer of the mucosa, cellular and vascular alterations, reduction of the immune defenses, with a consequent greater risk of potentially malignant (precancerous) lesions. THE tumors of the oral cavity they are 6 times more likely to occur in smokers. The tobacco smoke is, after the accumulation of bacterial plaque, the most important factor
in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Alcohol intake

At the level of the oral cavity, thealcohol intake causes an atrophy of the taste buds of the tongue, causing alterations in taste. Alcohol is broken down by enzymes naturally present in the mouth and turns into a substance called acetaldehyde which damages periodontal tissues. Alcoholic products, also due to their high sugar content, cause oral acidosis and predispose to the development of erosions and dental caries. L'association of alcohol and smoking determines an exponential increase in the risk of
oral cancer.
