    The conference that involves 400 young people from all over the world, called to make concrete proposals to save the planet from the climate crisis, kicks off tomorrow

    At the end of last August, the selection of the 400 young people aged between 15 and 19, who will participate in Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition - the first event to fight climate change which will take place in Milan from 28 to 30 September 2021. Three days of debates and workshops in view of the 26th Conference of the Parties, in which the young activists participating will have the opportunity to interact directly with the representatives of the governments present. The results of the meeting will be brought to COP26 to be held in Glasgow in November and will also be shared in other UN meetings dedicated to sustainable development.

    The selection of young people has tried to maintain gender equality and geographical origin (the boys represent 186 countries around the world, including poorly represented countries such as Andorra, Brunei, Cook Islands, Eritrea, Gabon, Nauru, San Marino, Slovenia and Tuvalu), and rewarded at the same time children's activism on the issues of climate change and sustainable development. The students were selected thanks to a questionnaire aimed at bringing out their strategic thinking and leadership skills, and their motivation in the environmental cause.

    There are four major themes which will be dealt with in the three Milanese days, for which young people are called to make concrete proposals:

    1. Youth Driving ambition: encourage the participation of young people in decision-making processes to implement concrete actions to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement;
    2. Sustainable recovery: to combine the economic recovery after the pandemic with the implementation of the objectives of the Paris Agreement (in this section, topics such as energy transition and green jobs, sustainable tourism will be explored);
    3. Non-state actors’ engagement: analyze the role of non-governmental actors in the fight against climate change and in the sectors that impact the daily life of young people;
    4. Climate conscious society: build a society that is more aware of the climatic challenges, through environmental education, public awareness raising, the importance of indigenous peoples.

    The first two days of the convention will be dedicated to the development of a declaration, while in the last the young people will have the opportunity to discuss environmental issues with the ministers present. The final document will contain proposals and recommendations on topics to be discussed with the government representatives who will meet over the following three days (on the occasion of the PreCop) and in Glasgow next November. The event was organized by our Ministry of Ecological Transition, which took care of the selection of the children and which provided for the travel and accommodation costs of the selected participants.
