Lo study in question was published in the scientific journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. It was conducted by a group of international researchers led by Craig Downs and found the highest levels of oxybenzone around the coral reefs of the most popular and popular tourist destinations, such as the Caraibi and Hawaii.
L’oxybenzone alters the DNA of corals and acts as endocrine disruptor causing the death of newborn corals. Every year in areas where coral reefs are present, between 6000 and 14 tons of sunscreen residues accumulate.
The risks of oxybenzone are not only linked to the environment and the coral reef but also to health.
