Twenty more minutes of sleep for the ladies, just enough to recharge your batteries. The female universe needs more sleep than men. Because? Needless to say, women tend to do more tasks throughout the day and have a brain structure that leads to an increased need for sleep.

This is supported by doctor Jim Horne, the leading British expert in sleep sciences and director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University, who in an article also taken up by the British National Sleep Foundation explained that on average women need another twenty minutes of sleep compared to men essentially because “the more you use your brain during the day, the more it needs to rest during the night”.

Focusing precisely on the differences between men and women during the night, the female brain is, according to experts, much more complex than that of men and this complexity also affects the hours of sleep.

Sleep disturbance in women is a consequence, according to Professor Horne, to more “felt” emotions on the part of women. Emotions and moods that, on the other hand, do not affect men's sleep so much. And not only that: menopause, pregnancy or premenstrual syndrome can also ruin the quality and quantity of sleep in women.

In short, if "one of the main functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover", as Professor Horne, author of "Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep" says, then it will also be true that given the complexity of their daily life, women also need more time to spend in peaceful sleep.

“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more you need to recover and, as a result, you need more sleep. Women tend to do more tasks and therefore use more brains than men. For this reason, their need for sleep is greater ”. Thus Horne explains why there is a greater need to rest, which does not exclude, however, who - man or woman - carries out a job that leads to making important decisions every day. Even in this, more sleep will be needed than the "average man", as the British professor says, "but always less than a woman's hours of sleep".

In short, the complexity and intensity of female brain activity would be at the basis of a greater need for hours of sleep, even if - let's face it - individual needs are very different: some people manage to get by easily in six hours while others don't.

The important thing is that we all sleep well enough not to feel excessively tired during the day. Here are all the tips for a healthy and restorative sleep!
