The food supplement in sachets has been recalled for too high levels of ethylene oxide, potentially carcinogenic to humans

The Ministry of Health has announced the recall of some batches of the food supplement Polase Difesa Winter, produced by GSK Consumer Healthcare Srl, in packs of 14 and 28 sachets of 7,1 grams. The production batches affected by the recall are STA63 and STA64; NT602 and NT603; the expiry dates are, respectively, March 2023 and April 2023. The reason for the precautionary recall is the presence of traces of ethylene oxide in concentrations above the permitted limits within an ingredient used in the product batches mentioned.

If you have purchased a package that can be traced back to the product lots indicated above, it is advisable to discontinue its consumption immediately and return the supplement to the point of sale. For any information, the manufacturer invites you to contact n. green 800931556 or to write to the e-mail address: it.servizio-consumatori@gsk.com.

This is not the first withdrawal of products from the market due to the chemical risk associated with the excessive presence of ethylene oxide, but what is it and why is it dangerous for our health? Ethylene oxide is a gaseous disinfectant used to prevent the growth of molds and to prevent salmonella: given its strong antibacterial and fungicidal power, it is used in the food sector as a sterilant as an alternative to pasteurization for those thermolabile products that would be damaged by heat - in this way, it ends in the products we eat. Unfortunately, however, it is a highly toxic substance, defined as a carcinogen and mutagen for humans as far back as 1994. The risk to our health is potential chronic: in practice, if a person were to consume it every day, for all life, a large amount of the contaminated product there would be consequences for his health.
