A study by the University of Pavia shows that red wine prevents the formation of cavities

To prefer the Red wine to protect the health of your teeth we had suggested it some time referring to a German study that had shown how white wine damages the teeth due to the presence of acid substances. Today, however, another study carried out by some researchers of the University of Pavia arrives to argue, even, that the nectar of the gods in its "tinted" version would really help our mouth, preventing the formation of some harmful bacteria.

In the eternal dispute between white and red, the second therefore marks another point in its favor. But what does it mean that red wine protects our teeth? Scholars have shown that some substances contained in the drink form a kind of protective film on the surface of our teeth. This patina prevents the attack of the "Streptococcus mutants“, Which feeds on food residues and sugars, affecting it enamel of teeth and promoting the formation of caries.

To make their results even more certain was the counter-proof ofalcohol. In fact, they studied the reactions of bacteria in contact with an alcohol-free red wine, and the result was the same. It is therefore not alcohol that has beneficial effects, but a group of compounds called proantocianidine, substances rich in antioxidants found in peel of bunches of grapes.

Dr. Gabriella Gazzani, who took part in the research published among other things in the journal Food Chemistry, explained: “Bacteria found in the mouth can corrode tooth enamel by sticking to their surface. The bacterium Streptococcus mutants that feeds on sugars that we introduce with our diet is among the most harmful because it causes the demineralization of the enamel. The red wine, however, prevents the bacterium from affecting the surface of the enamel, protecting the teeth and preventing their deterioration ".
