Wind power: from Siemens the new direct drive turbine that halves the components used

Direct drive SWT-3.0-101 is the name of the new wind turbine launched by the Siemens Energy sector, on the occasion of the European Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition in Warsaw (EWEC 2010) and officially presented today at the Eolica Expo Mediterranean 2010 in Rome.

Is called direct drive SWT-3.0-101 the new wind turbine launched by the sector Energy from Siemens, on the occasion of the European Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition in Warsaw (EWEC 2010) and officially presented today at Eolica Expo Mediterranean 2010 in progress in Rome.

The turbine - now on the market for onshore and offshore projects all over the world - differs from the others for having introduced a new technology, the direct drive with permanent magnets without speed multiplier able to guarantee excellent performance with half of the components.
Thanks to the use of this new technology, in fact, the turbine requires less maintenance and offers greater and better performance in terms of profit, but it stands out, precisely for the reduced number of components and rotating parts. But that's not all, because the ratio of the turbine power (which measures 3MW) and the rotor diameter (101m) achieved in this way represents an excellent compromise, especially in the Italian market.

"Our new wind turbine SWT-3.0-101 offers 25% more energy than the current 2,3 MW one, while weighing less and having half the components" - commented Henrik Stiesdal, CTO of the Business Siemens Wind Power Unit - With this new turbine we have set ourselves the dual objective of reducing complexity and obtaining greater reliability and profitability for our customers. Looking at the future scenario of energy production, we are convinced that ours new direct drive wind turbine will prove to be a reliable investment".

This new technology has a simple and robust design it does not require energy for arousal with the result of guaranteeing high efficiency even at low loads. Furthermore, the spacecraft of the SWT-3.0-101 barely weighs 73 tons and being long 6,8 meters for a diameter of only 4,2 meters, can be transported more easily than traditional nacelles using standard vehicles commonly available in major markets.

“Despite the compact design” - added Henrik Stiesdal - “we have nevertheless chosen to give our technicians more space in which to work, considering the radical reduction in the number of components”.

In short, thanks to the new Siemens technology, this turbine offers the possibility of producing more while saving on materials.
