Wind and photovoltaic together against expensive bills: what are mixed domestic systems

Renewables, who says we have to choose? Wind power and photovoltaics can be installed together, even as a domestic solution, by developing a mixed system that uses both the sun and the wind. And that cuts the bills

The story is not that long but it evolved quickly: the mixed wind and solar systems they are now a reality and can be an alternative, even domestic, to reduce bills and above all to avoid the consumption of energy produced from fossil sources.

Photovoltaics is probably the most advanced renewable energy source but still has limits, typical of all renewables, that is the "intermittence" of energy production, linked to the source, the sun, in the absence of which production stops.

For this reason, it is always recommended to install a battery that stores energy in peak periods and can then be used in “lean” ones. Even the installation of the battery alone is an expense that can enjoy tax benefits, but its disposal at the end of its life presents additional environmental problems.

Wind has the same limit, that is the link with the source, the wind in this case. There is also a "domestic solution" for this energy source, but neither balcony photovoltaics nor small wind turbines can guarantee complete disconnection from the grid. No two, therefore, can satisfy the energy needs of a housing unit.

But why not combine the two systems?

It is certainly not a new invention nor is it still a frontier research. Mixed systems exist and can also be of the domestic type. In very favorable conditions they can even make a house completely "off grid", ie disconnected from the grid, therefore energy self-sufficient.

The advantage of a mixed solar and wind system is precisely that of exploiting two energy sources in a certain sense complementary. Generally speaking, a photovoltaic system is particularly efficient in the summer, when the sun abounds, while a wind turbine “takes the lion's share” in the winter, when the weather gets worse and the wind rises more often.

In 2015, the first real mixed solar / wind home plant, SolarMill, a sort of turbine panel, which combined the production of energy from the sun and wind with a single generator, was born.

The domestic solution of the time was formed by three 300W photovoltaic modules and three vertical axis micro wind turbines, which provide another 300W of additional capacity, providing a total power of 1,2 kW. This basic version made it possible to produce about 135 kWh per month occupying a limited space, equal to 3 meters by 2.

Since then, technology has certainly not stopped and today there are many different solutions, which take into account different situations and conditions: average wind speed, solar exposure, complementarity of the two sources, grid connection costs and many other parameters. .

Today they sell their own hybrid solar photovoltaic wind kits and the costs, as usual, are not exactly popular (1.500-2.000 euro), especially if you are not experts and therefore you need professionals for the installation.

But the expensive bills are advancing inexorably and the planet cannot wait. All the solutions to save energy and to produce it cleanly deserve to be considered.
