    Many know her for her colorful and imaginative paintings and her naive art that made her one of the most famous Ukrainian painters ever

    Maria Prymachenko is for many art connoisseurs one pure expression of folklore and creativity, elements that stand out in his paintings and that would have been highly appreciated by Pablo Picasso too.





    The Ukrainian artist is still one of the most famous in the country and has recently been the center of attention because last February 27 a Russian military attack hit the Museum of History and Local History of Ivankiv - near Kiev - which exhibited inside 25 of his paintings that were destroyed by flames flare up.     This woman born in 1908 approached painting as a self-taught person, having been born and raised in a peasant family in the village of Bolotnya, about 30 km from Chernobyl. Her mother taught her to embroider, bringing her closer to the local culture.

    In this rural setting, inspired by the Ukrainian landscapes and the traditions of her people - especially the Polesia region -, Maria Prymachenko began to paint colorful subjective surrounded by floral references that are never lacking in his paintings. Her skill struck the artist Tetiana Floru who invited her to the laboratory of the Ukrainian Art Museum in Kiev from which Maria Prymachenko began to make herself known.

    Sick of polio, she underwent two surgeries in Kiev where she met her future husband and where their son Fedir was born, who later became a painter too. Her exhibitions in Moscow, Warsaw and Paris guaranteed her appreciation even outside Europe and just after seeing the works of the painter in the French capital Pablo Picasso would have exclaimed

    I bow before the artistic miracle of this brilliant Ukrainian "



    In 1966 Maria Prymachenko obtained a very important recognition, the National Prize of Ukraine Taras Shevchenko, which elected her to most representative artist of his Ukraine. Maria Prymachenko died in 2008, a year before she could receive the honor of being the artist of choice for 2009 by UNESCO.

    With her brushstrokes, her colors and a simple but very rich art, Maria Prymachenko painted traits of Ukraine that risk disappearing forever due to the ongoing war and which have already disappeared in the flames that burned his precious works at the affected museum.
