April is the ideal month to dedicate yourself to the pruning of some species of trees.

Acacia dealbata (mimosa)

For the young people mimosa trees proceed by pruning the lateral shoots on the main stems. After that, you can proceed with the removal of the frost-damaged growth, which is best done after flowering in late spring.

Fruit trees

April is also the month when most of the fruit trees, going to remove all the branches damaged by the winter cold. In particular, in this period the drupacee such as peach, plum, apricot and almond trees.

Shrubs

April pruning also includes various specimens of shrubs.

Aucuba japonica (spotted laurel)

It's the perfect time to prune the feminine forms of this popular, hardy, rounded evergreen. During the first spring after planting, reduce growth by about a third to encourage flowering from the base. Wait until mid-summer to prune any spotted laurels that have grown as hedges.

Callicarpa

Don't prune this shrub until the danger of frost has passed, but before the new shoots begin to break apart. For pruning, simply cut off the unruly stems by removing them completely.

Camelia

Although the camellias require little or no annual pruning, they can be cut in spring after flowering to tidy up messy stems. You can also keep the bushes small and compact by reducing the previous year's growth to a couple of buds. Old plants can be cut hard in spring to encourage vigorous new flowering from the base.

Even the most substantial branches can be reduced to a squat structure of 60-90 cm in height. Keep all plants looking their best by removing wilted flowers that remain on the shrub.

Calluna (Scottish heather)

Keep plants neat and tidy by trimming them with shears after flowering is over, but before new growth stops. This is also an ideal time to remove any unusual growth and scattered shoots, as well as any dead stems.

Forsizia

La forsythia it still blooms until April, so pruning will still need to be done towards the end of the month. Do not prune forsythia during the first few years after planting. However, older plants that are not pruned become woody at the base where few flowers are produced; to avoid this, prune at the end of flowering, cutting off the oldest stems at the base.

Some climbing plants they must be pruned in April. Let's find out together.

Passiflora (passion flower)

The best way to grow the flowers of the passiflora is to establish a permanent structure of stems spaced approximately 15-20 cm from each other on a sturdy support, such as an arbor or arch, or fence. During the first spring after planting, select the strongest shoots to tie to the support.

If you grow it on a pole, remove any side shoots. Each spring, completely remove frost-damaged growth. After flowering in late summer, cut the flowering shoots to within 2 or 3 buds of the tree. Neglected plants can be reinvigorated by cutting off a few older stems. (Read also: Passionflower purple, the plant that can reduce anxiety and insomnia in just 30 minutes)

Solanum (potato vine)

This species should be pruned in early spring to reduce growth and limit the size of the plant. Older plants can be difficult to rejuvenate because they do not respond to severe pruning, so it is good to proceed with pruning at the most appropriate time, avoiding neglecting the plants.
