Autumn is coming and it's time for new pruning. Here are all the plants, shrubs and trees to prune in October
Fall is a busy season in pruning calendar, the perfect time to remove old growth and get your plants back into shape; this is, therefore, the best time to cut off dead stems and top growth in order to prevent the onset of fungal diseases.
But what can be pruned in October? This is the full autumn month when fruit bushes, such as currants and gooseberries, should be pruned, which will benefit from thinning. Fall is also the time to prune aromatic plants and ornamental, such as lavender and rosemary, which would not be able to withstand winter pruning. Fruit bushes

October is the month to dedicate to pruning of fruit bushes, such as black currants, raspberries, gooseberries, and red currants, by pruning the fruiting stems. For red currants, cut the current season's growth to a couple of buds from the base. For raspberries, instead, proceed by cutting off the old stems and tying the new canes for next year's harvest.
Perennial herbaceous plants

If your garden is full of perennials tall and messy, now is the time to remove dead flower stalks, and basal foliage if necessary, in order to tidy up the perennial herbaceous hedges before winter arrives. The perennials to prune in this month are:
- delphinium
- lupins
- holly
- osmanto
- privet
- peonies
- phlox
- autumn asters.
Mediterranean shrubs and aromatic herbs

- Mediterranean shrubs they are sun-loving and do not tolerate harsh pruning in winter. Rosemary and lavender, for example, should be cut after flowering, but always before winter.
Perform this step using shears, to rearrange and reshape them all at once. Never cut old wood, as this could kill the plants.
Yew hedges and coniferous plants

The yew is quite hardy and can tolerate subsequent pruning, compared to most other hedge plants. If you want to prune it, do it in early autumn, this is the ideal time, as its outline will remain sharp throughout the winter.
Along with the yew, October is the period of cypress pruning, juniper, cedar and fir; these coniferous plants should only be pruned if the plant has developed a lot, since the goal of this operation is to make the foliage compact to face the cold winter.
Ornamental trees

Trees like maple and rowan have a lovely fall color, especially when the edges begin to fade. Once the yellowed leaves have fallen, it is necessary prune ornamental trees while they are dormant, that is, during autumn and early winter.
Deciduous trees
