Plastic bottles: do you have to remove the cap and squeeze them when throwing them away? Here's how to dispose of them properly

It is not enough to do the separate collection, it is very important to do it in the most correct way. Many still make mistakes when it comes to waste disposal. Among the objects most consumed in absolute (and badly disposed of) are the plastic bottles, which unfortunately is still being abused, especially during the holiday period.

This waste, of course, must be disposed of in the plastic. But how should we proceed? And, above all, how should they be crushed?

To clarify, we turned to Eleonora Brionne, Head of Communication and External Relations of COREPLA (National Consortium for the collection, recycling and recovery of plastic packaging) who explains the steps to follow:

The most common mistake is to wash plastic bottles like all plastic packaging. In fact, for proper recycling it is necessary to empty them completely. To facilitate recycling, it is only necessary to empty it, flatten it on the side, close the cap correctly and then dispose of it in the separate collection.

When we throw away empty plastic bottles, therefore, remember to squeeze them lengthwise to make them as flat as possible and not from top to bottom (making them shorter). It is essential to empty the plastic bottles and squeeze them well to prevent them from slipping off the belts that transport them to the various sorting machines and end up in the unsorted collection.

Finally, if the labels are made of plastic, they must not be removed. They should only be eliminated if they are made of paper.

Separate collection: other mistakes to avoid

Be careful, however, if you use compostable bioplastic cutlery, trays or bags (which will replace disposable plastic from next year). This waste should not be disposed of in the plastic, but in the organic waste.

Speaking of recycling, many people still continue to dispose of items such as toys and pens in their plastic waste.

“One of the most common mistakes is to include items that are not plastic packaging in the collection. Just to give some examples, the toys, the bowls, the Biro pens and the glasses ”underlines Eleonora Brionne.

In fact, even if they are made of plastic, all these waste are not packaging and must be disposed of in the unsorted collection.
