NaturePlay is the new award-winning documentary by the Danish director Dan Stilling which tells about Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the United States through the eyes of the little ones, showing the huge difference between those who grew up in the countries of northern Europe and those in the New Continent.

Stilling's story starts from an America that has transformed children into many small robots, it standardized them by killing their instinctive love of play, exploration and discovery. In American schools whole years are lost for the preparation of expensive tests, precious hours are stolen that should be destined for fun and childish lightheartedness.

“There is something terribly wrong with the American school system. This is not the way children should learn. No wonder American kids are stressed out, they suffer from obesity and depression. Parents force them to study a lot and do extracurricular activities in the name of preparing for success in adult life, "he says. Stilling.

This is the reason why the director decides to compare the life of little Americans with that of little Northern Europeans who grow up in contact with nature, without obsessions and getting their hands dirty with the earth. A much more normal, linear and certainly more effective approach.

Rather than standardized robots, children pursue their childhood, learning through the game and the open air to grow. The documentary, which has won 5 international awards, recounts life in the nearby woods in 80 minutes Copenhagen, among the Norwegian fjords far from skyscrapers and eco-monsters.

"I children belong to nature and nature is the best teacher. This is why in Scandinavian countries many attend schools and kindergartens in the woods and despite the temperatures they spend their days there, never getting tired of rain, sun or wind ”, adds Stilling.

What every child's childhood should be like: education in Scandinavian nature (VIDEO) In the film, the little ones learn to tie knots, climb steep walls, help prepare school meals and get hurt, and then get up stronger than before.

“Here no one yells at them not to get dirty, to be careful, not to run because adults think it is a way to make children understand what it means to take risks and find the right balance. In short, a world completely far from the American one ”, explains the Danish director.

“The goal of my documentary is to show that the right path is the one taken in Northern Europe. You don't need too rigid rules, better to adopt common sense by treating children with humanity and not as if they were an integral part of a system already written by adults ".
