The spiral of fish immortalized by researcher Kristen Brown in the Great Barrier Reef is a metaphor for the crisis of the oceans

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Fish, like few other animals in the world, manage to create almost mesmerizing choreographies. While swimming in the sea they are able to give life to real shows, which fascinate divers and marine biologists. And with a little luck, there are those who manage to immortalize their incredible shows. She recently succeeded in making the perfect photo Kristen Brown, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in studies on the Great Barrier Reef.

During one of his dives in the waters of Heron Island, he took a beautiful photograph of a school of Trevally fish moving in a single spiral. Brown was on the Australian island with his colleagues to investigate the reaction of local corals to ocean acidification. The evocative shot won the first prize of the competition Ecology and Evolution Image 2021, organized magazine BMC (Biomedcentral). All the awarded images celebrate the terrestrial biodiversity of our planet and its evolutionary origins.

But the photo made by Kristen Brown is more than just a picture. For the scientist it is a metaphor for the spiral crisis that our oceans are experiencing.

It represents both the beauty and bounty of our oceans, and the spiraling crisis that is unfolding within the marine environment - he explains - Coral reefs with high coral cover and abundant fish populations like this one at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef are unfortunately becoming rarer. Without a targeted effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality, coral reefs as we know them are in danger of disappearing in our lifetime.

A shot that is an invitation to act to preserve the biodiversity of the oceans

Thanks to the attention she has received, Kristen Brown hopes this photo will lead to a stronger interest in the conservation of marine fauna and flora.

“Because the image has captivated so many people, it is a great platform through which to share what is happening,” he adds.

His photo is therefore an invitation to admire the beauties of Mother Nature, but above all an exhortation to act in defense of our precious Oceans.
