Dogs don't talk (even if they communicate in other ways), they can't exactly describe their symptoms to us if they don't feel well. But for some ailments we can use external "clues", including their faeces.

As in humans, bodily emissions, even farts, can be spies of health. So even dogs can tell us a lot if we are attentive to their life and their habits. Carrying our four-legged friend around can therefore (and must) become a preliminary "screening" which must obviously be followed, in case of suspicion, by a visit from a veterinarian.

Here are the most common characteristics of our dog's feces that we should keep an eye on and some advice on those changes that should lead us to bring our friend to visit.

Texture and shape

As in humans, solid and full-bodied stools are a sign of good health (at least of the digestive component). In the case of dogs even better if they are "elongated" and "fixed". Especially if they are brown, then, we can sleep peacefully: the animal is definitely in shape.

If, on the other hand, the stools appear "greasy" for a week or more, something may be wrong. In fact it is natural that the intestinal glands of the lower tract produce a lubricating mucus able to help the colon to expel organic waste, and therefore find the mucus also on the outside, but if this happens for too many consecutive days it is better to consult a specialist .

Finally, just like for us, too liquid stools are a sign of diarrhea due to the most disparate causes (intolerances, viruses, bacteria, etc.), just as too "hard" ones can indicate constipation. And again, at least one diet change may be required.

Color

Brown is ideal. Of course, some color variations can occur according to the diet, but excessive differences can indicate a disorder, even serious. The white color, for example, could be linked to a diet excessively rich in raw foods with a high calcium content, green a sign of a liver problem of a purely biliary nature (while yellow or orange of a different nature, including pancreatic), black internal bleeding due to various causes.

Smell

Ok the feces, in general, do not smell decidedly. However, an excessive odor, however unusual, could be a sign of discomfort, especially if our friend expels a large amount of it. Even low-quality food can cause these problems. But beware: it is better to avoid sudden changes in diet, because "food shocks" could cause similar problems.

In general, any difference you notice, it is better to consult a veterinarian, perhaps bringing a stool sample (which in general is still important to collect from the ground).

We will discover, perhaps, that our friends are not that different from us, not even "in the bathroom".
