Weeds begin to resist glyphosate (and spoil Bayer's hopes)

Some weeds are starting to show some resistance to Monsanto Bayer's Roundup herbicide which contains glyphosate and has long been at the center of the debate over its possible carcinogenicity. Some farmers are thus driven to use more and more, all at the expense of human health.

Roundup herbicide has brought a lot of legal trouble and now plants are also revolting and showing increasing resistance to glyphosate

Some weeds are starting to show some resistance to Monsanto Bayer's Roundup herbicide which contains glyphosate and has long been at the center of the debate over its possible carcinogenicity. Some farmers are thus driven to use more and more, all at the expense of human health.

Alongside the problems in court, for Monsanto now there are those related to the effective functionality of the product, the famous best-selling herbicide in the world. There are already 43 pest species, including Amaranthus palmeri that have already developed resistance to glyphosate. To tell the story of David Nichols, a farmer who habitually uses the herbicide is Financial Time.

Nichols despite the glyphosate herbicide, it seems he can no longer keep weeds at bay. Since Bayer acquired Monsanto, there has been no shortage of controversy. In court, the giant has already lost two lawsuits, two former farmers who accused him of getting cancer from glyphosate. But there are over 13 identical causes.

“We relied solely on glyphosate. We thought it was great, ”said Nichols, who grows near the Mississippi River in western Tennessee. "We've probably abused that herbicide and now have complete resistance to glyphosate."

The 3600 acres of Nichols land are invaded by amaranth, one of the 43 species of grass in the world that has developed resistance to glyphosate precisely because it has been abused a lot in recent years. On the other hand, the problem is that Monsanto has developed GM cotton and soybean crops that are able to tolerate both glyphosate and dicamba. All this is to the detriment of human health.

Resistance to glyphosate is also pushing some to use it more and more and this could lead to crop destruction in the long term. An increasingly difficult situation to manage.
