Reading a lot to preschoolers gives them a linguistic advantage of nearly ten months.

The amazing power of reading to the little ones is confirmed: leafing through a book with them, especially in preschool age, guarantees a linguistic advantage of almost ten months

Reading to children is good, very good! They learn things, memorize characters, see figures and marvel. A fable, a story, a colored book gives them the opportunity to know the world and to name everything. So much so that it would give the little ones a linguistic advantage of eight months.

This is confirmed by a research by Newcastle University's School of Education, led by James Law, professor of language sciences, who is sure on one point: those eight months, all gained, might seem few, but they are not, especially if calibrated on children under the age of five.

To reach these conclusions, the scholars carried out a systematic review of the studies with reading interventions from the last 40 years (the average age of the children involved in the 16 studies included in the review was 39 months and the searches were conducted in five countries : United States, South Africa, Canada, Israel and China), where both books and e-readers were used and where the reading was done with a parent or someone who cared for the little ones.

Scholars have thus discovered that receptive language skills, that is ability to understand information, I am positively influenced when preschoolers read with someone who cares for them.

And socially disadvantaged children would benefit most: “We already knew that reading with children offers advantages for their development and subsequent academic performance - explains Professor Law - but the eight-month advantage of this review was surprising. Eight months is a big difference in language skills when looking at children under five ”.

Read on then! Read as much as you can to your little ones, they will never stop thanking you for the infinite possibilities that opening a book offers!
