We need more protected areas, but we are about to reduce that of the Etna Park

The Etna Park Council wants to start a "re-measurement" project which, according to environmental associations, would reduce the protected areas

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

The Etna Park Council, led by Carlo Caputo, seems to have all the intentions of review the constraints established by the Sicily Region 35 years ago.

It is a "re-measurement" project of the Park area that would put a hand to the restrictions decided on March 17, 1987 - when the Park Authority was established - to avoid the wild overbuilding of almost 60 thousand hectares of land around the volcano.

Ten days ago, on the anniversary of the establishment of the Etna park, the Council unanimously resolved on a technical table to work on re-measuring the area.

Why would the area need to be re-measured? According to Carlo Caputo the building rules would be too strict and the limits must be reviewed as they do not allow property owners to renovate their homes, which are consequently abandoned.

If the mayors of the Park Council unanimously express the need to think about a proposal for re-measuring the Park, this is a fact that we can no longer neglect.
The majority of these disagreements are linked to too strict building regulations. There is no talk of building new airspace, it is not a question of land consumption but only of enhancing the existing one.
It is evident that some limitations have appeared over these 35 years that are exaggerated if not harmful.
A citizen who owns a property has been placed so many burdensome constraints that in the end he has given up on renovating, enhancing, result? There remained ugly construction and abandoned privately owned land. We are trying to review procedures and rules but the road is long and there are obstacles - explains Caputo on Facebook

This explanation is obviously not sufficient for Legambiente Sicilia, which does not approve the Council's decision on the revision of the perimeters of the Park.

This decision is diametrically opposed to that of Legambiente Sicilia, which proposed the establishment of the National Park. It is certainly not by restricting the protected area that it will be possible to achieve objectives that aim at a real development of the territory: quality agriculture that enhances the typical products of Etna, experiential and non-mass tourism, food and wine that focuses on the excellence of a culture millennial. Rather, the desire to favor the interests of one party is evident, without seeking shared and above all environmentally friendly solutions - reads a statement from the association.

According to Legambiente, the re-measurement is not in line with the objective of protecting and conserving the unique natural environment that characterizes the Etna area and would lead to a reduction in the protected areas and, consequently, a decrease in natural habitats and spaces. protected for flora and fauna.

If indeed the re-measurement went to reduce protected areas, we would also be in the opposite direction from what is recommended by scientists and the UN, which have long underlined the importance of increasing protected areas throughout the planet to safeguard the territory and biodiversity.
