The best sunscreens without oxybenzone and other controversial chemical filters, which use mineral filters instead

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

When it comes to sunscreens, we often talk about the controversial chemical filters that they may contain in their composition, including oxybenzone. The risks of spreading this substance on the skin are not yet fully ascertained but undoubtedly it is better to choose sunscreens that use other types of filters.

Oxybenzone is a chemical that absorbs the sun's UV rays so they cannot penetrate the skin and cause damage. However, research shows that oxybenzone, once absorbed by the skin, can end up in the bloodstream and this could have health consequences, in particular by interfering with the endocrine system.

Then there is also the environmental discourse. Just yesterday we told you about a new study that shows how sunscreens that end up in the sea and contain oxybenzone are harmful to corals. Also read: Avoid sunscreens that have this ingredient on the label, because they are killing corals: the new confirmation.

The risks of oxybenzone

But is oxybenzone really dangerous? What do dermatologists think? As Susan Chon, professor of dermatology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center said:

One of the things we worry about is that it could interfere with the endocrine system, it could be some kind of hormone destroyer. It also very commonly causes a photoallergic or irritating reaction.

This means that when oxybenzone is exposed to sunlight (which is the main purpose of its use), it can cause an itchy rash or other skin reactions and rashes in susceptible people.

These are probably the main two things, but in reality it is also very harmful to other life forms, such as coral, so much so that in 2018 in Hawaii they banned the use of oxybenzone and octinoxate.

The American FDA also spoke about oxybenzone following the results of a study that found that six specific chemical sunscreens (avobenzone, octocylene, homosalate, octisalate, octinoxate and, of course, oxybenzone) can be found in our blood after a single application of products containing them.

It is not known if and what damage oxybenzone can cause but it is certain that, once absorbed by the skin, it reaches the blood and this is not good news.

However, mineral filters are unlikely to enter the body in the same way as a chemical ingredient. So several tests, and the FDA itself, have pointed out that zinc oxide or titanium dioxide products provide broad spectrum UV protection with less risk than other sunscreens. Therefore they would be preferred.

Oxybenzone-free sunscreens

The advice is therefore to buy sunscreens without oxybenzone and other chemical filters, preferring instead those that use mineral filters.
