Watermelon is one of the main fruits of the summer. When the heat increases thirst and makes us lose greater quantities of water and mineral salts, a nice slice of watermelon comes to our aid and can give us great relief. According to scientists, its properties would not stop there: the watermelon would indeed be able to reduce blood pressure while protecting the heart.

In fact, new research, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, has highlighted how eating watermelon, but also taking the extract when this fruit is not available, can contribute to improve hypertension situations in overweight people, even in the cold season. It seems a useless clarification but it is not given that it is precisely when people are most exposed to the cold that deaths from heart attack increase, due to the stress to which the body is subjected that has to pump more blood with a consequent rise in pressure.

The study was done at Florida State University for 12 weeks on a small sample: 13 obese middle-aged men and women who had suffered from high blood pressure. The people were divided into two groups which were hired respectively a watermelon extract (consisting of 4 grams of L-Citrulline and 2 grams of L-Arginine, both amino acids) and a placebo. Participants' hands were immersed in cold water in order to simulate cold weather conditions before measuring blood pressure.

This is the result according to Professor Arthur Figueroa, lead author of the research: “after consuming the watermelon extract the pressure on the aorta and heart decreased. This means less overload for the heart, so much so that the organ can work easily during a stressful situation such as exposure to cold “.

It is evident that, starting from these good premises, new and more in-depth research is needed to fully confirm the validity of the watermelon extract as natural remedy for hypertension.
