Water saving: how much time do you spend in the shower?

What are your shower habits? How much time do you spend each morning on your personal hygiene? According to the Shower Power campaign, launched in the UK in an attempt to educate citizens on saving water, and in particular, by encouraging short-term showers, it has been shown that, contrary to popular belief, women barely spend 39 seconds more than men in the shower, despite shampoos, conditioners and hair creams!

What are yours habits in the shower? How much time do you spend on yours every morning personal hygiene? According to the "Shower Power" campaign, launched in the UK in an attempt to educate citizens about water saving, and in particular, encouraging short-term showers, it has been shown that, contrary to popular belief, women hardly pass 39 seconds longer than men in the shower, despite shampoos, conditioners and hair creams!

How we choose to cool off is a bigger environmental problem than we might think having a dramatic impact on our daily water consumption which according to this research has been estimated, in Great Britain alone, at 150 liters per capita per day! For this reason, the British government has launched the campaign with the aim of reversing the trend and reducing individual daily consumption, increasing by about 1% per year, to at least 130 liters by 2030.

Returning to the statics of research, the vast majority of women (71%) apparently can take a shower in less than 10 minutes and even a quarter of women (26%) manage to do it in less than five minutes. As for the men the percentages are respectively of 75% and 30%.

There are also interesting differences by age, the time spent in the shower decreases with increasing age. In fact, people around 55 take around 8 minutes, while those between 18 and 24 take 13! Does this mean that more mature people spend less time on their hygiene or that they have greater awareness and concern for proper water conservation?

Of course, the daily use of water does not only refer to personal washing, just think ofhot water used for space heating, for the toilet flush or for the washing machines and dishwasher! And this not only affects our domestic counter (with consequent trauma to the bimonthly arrival of bills) but also and above all on the world one.

Generally just to avoid high bills at the end of the month, the shower is preferred to the bathroom and this has been verified by some recent trends such as the increase in sales of shower gel instead of the very affectionate bubble bath. In addition to the advantage of not having to wipe off the foam from the edge of the tub, when you have a shower, the use of water is much less. When we decide to "take a bath" we already know that on average we will use at least 80 liters of water! While doing a quick calculation to take a shower we will use it on average 6 liters per minute so that to waste the same amount of water we would have to soap and scrub energetically for at least 13 minutes.

However, there are ways to make your shower not only more pleasant but even greener! First rule and perhaps the most pleasant, as also recommended in the eco-sex guide: take a shower for two! But if we can't do this right now, aerated showers are currently on the market, i.e. with a system that allows you to mix air with water, increasing the jet, thus making it more powerful, but at the same time decreasing its consumption.

Obviously, even using these eco-friendly showers we must remember that as in life even in the shower, timing is everything, so to understand how much our personal hygiene affects the environment and how much water we consume daily: watch the meter !! And maybe even the video of the campagna Shower Power:
