Water increasingly scarce: 40% less in 2030

There is no more water. The planet will face a 40% deficit in water supply by 2030, unless we greatly improve the management of this precious resource. There is no more water. The planet will face a 40% deficit in water supply by 2030, unless we significantly improve the management of this valuable resource. Otherwise we will say goodbye to much of the blue gold in the next 15 years due to urbanization, population growth and increased demand for food, energy and industry.

This is the conclusion he reaches on the occasion of the World Water Day, to be held on Sunday, the 2015 United Nations report World Water Development. The future scenario is disarming: by 2050 two thirds of the world population will live in cities and the demand for water will increase by 55 percent, mainly due to needs linked to growing urbanization in developing countries.

An example is sub-Saharan Africa, where urbanization - often unplanned - is developing more rapidly. Here the percentage of people who have running water has dropped to 34 percent, from 42 percent since 1990.

By 2050, the world will have to produce 60 percent more food, and global water demand for industry is expected to increase by 400 percent. The growing population will also need 70 percent more energy (and water is also needed for its production, in almost all forms).

“There is already an international consensus that water and sanitation are essential for the achievement of many sustainable development goals. They are inextricably linked to climate change, agriculture, food security, health, energy, equality, sex and education. Now we have to look ahead and measure, monitor and implement water, ”says Michel Jarraud, President of UN-Water and Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization.
