Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Are you familiar with the Nwtflix cartoon Klaus? Today it is a reality, open applications for the most remote post office in the world. In fact, the UK's Antarctic Heritage Trust is looking for someone willing to move to Antarctica for 5 months, based in Port Lockroy. He will be responsible for the penguin count, but also for the post office, museum and gift shop.

Port Lockroy is a bay that forms a natural harbor on the northwest coast of the island of Wiencke in the Palmer archipelago, west of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Antarctic base of the same name, located on the island of Goudier in this bay, includes the southernmost operational post office in the world.

The base has been unmanned since 2020 due to the pandemic, but candidates are now being sought who will remain at the base from late 2022 to March 2023.

    Requirements required

Candidates must possess a good level of physical fitness, environmental awareness and knowledge of life with minimal impact.

They will be tasked with running the gift shop and post office, as well as conducting a penguin count as part of efforts to protect the Gentoo penguin colony. The team will also take care of the artifacts and museum inside Bransfield House.

Applications from outside the UK are welcome, although the charity warns applicants “will be asked to provide documentation at the interview stage to prove your right to work [in the UK], which may include passports , permanent leave of residence, visas or any other supporting documents ".

The wait is finally over! Port Lockroy recruitment is now open ?❄️?Do you dream of waking up, looking out the window…

But why is there a post office on an Antarctic island?

Port Lockroy was the first permanent British scientific research base established on the Antarctic Peninsula and originally operated between 1944 and 1962.

The UK Antarctic Trust, a British charity, took over it in 2006 and has been running it as a tourism and conservation site ever since.

Today, Goudier Island is home to a small post office, Antarctic museum, and gift shop, all run by a rotating staff of four to five. Although it remained closed until last year due to pandemic health measures, it is usually open to the public during the Antarctic summer between November and March, when it welcomes thousands of tourists arriving by cruise ship.
