Vitamin D: when is the best time to take it, in the morning or in the evening?

Is it better to take vitamin D in the morning or in the evening? Can Vitamin D Really Relieve Sleep Disorders? Let's find out together.

To hire vitamin D daily brings numerous benefits for our body, for example it helps us in improving the health of bones, muscles and teeth and also helps us to regulate the levels of calcium and phosphate in the body. A vitamin D deficiency can often lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children and bone pain in adults caused by osteomalacia. (Read also: If you feel too tired while walking, you may have a vitamin D deficiency)

However, there are not many foods that contain vitamin D and one of the main sources for absorbing it naturally is there sunlight. Of course, due to the pandemic many of us have not been able to spend much time outdoors and it must also be emphasized that sun exposure can be harmful to our skin when it is not adequately protected with sunscreen. For these very reasons, many people resort to food supplements based on vitamin D.

There is still one question to answer: what is the best time of day to take vitamin D? In the morning or in the evening? A study published in the academic journal Current Pharmaceutical Design can help us solve this dilemma. The researchers sought to understand whether vitamin D played a role in sleep regulation and also what the impact of the vitamin deficiency was on sleep disturbances. Vitamin D, in fact, participates in the production of melatonin, the hormone involved in the regulation of sleep and human circadian rhythms (the so-called "biological clock"). Furthermore, vitamin D can affect sleep disorders even indirectly, by relieving pain and symptoms that compromise the quality of our sleep such as restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (sleep apnea). For this reason, taking vitamin D supplements during the evening could not only compensate for its deficiency but would have direct and indirect benefits on our sleep quality.

However, it should be specified that further studies are needed to confirm these hypotheses and, in the end, deciding to take the vitamin in the evening or in the morning could also be influenced by simple questions of convenience.
