In Mexico, the Senate unanimously approved a groundbreaking bill banning animal testing for cosmetics. It is the first country in North America and the 41st state in the world to ban this practice

Historic turning point in Mexico: in the American country it will be forbidden to conduct tests on animals to make cosmetic products. It is the first North American state to ban this cruelty. The new federal bill has been greeted with great enthusiasm by animal welfare organizations that have long been calling for an end to experimentation on rabbits, rats and other species that are used as guinea pigs by the cosmetics industry.

The new law not only makes animal testing illegal, it also bans the import and marketing of animal-tested cosmetics in other parts of the world. The activists of animal welfare organizations put pressure on the Mexican government Humane society international Mexico e NGO I protect you who have carried out the multi-year campaign with great determination #BeCrueltyFree. And a few days ago, all 103 Mexican senators who took part in the vote voted in favor of the revolutionary bill.

We thank the Mexican government for showing leadership on this important issue and we will continue to work with them to implement the commitments and enforce a strong ban - commented Antón Aguilar, executive director of Humane Society International Mexico - This is a monumental step forward for the animals, consumers and science in Mexico, and this groundbreaking legislation paves the way for the Americas to become the next cruelty-free beauty market and bring us a little closer to global ban. "

The decisive role of the "Save Ralph" campaign

The campaign launched last spring by the Humane Society International Mexico and which takes the name of "Save Ralph", referring to the title of the short film - in which the Oscar winner also took part, gave an important impetus to the new law. Taika Waititi and actor Zac Efron - in which the protagonist is a rabbit working in a laboratory. The rabbit Ralph, with sarcasm and irony, recounts the day as a laboratory guinea pig, as if it were "his job".

Save Ralph has had an unexpected global success, with over 150 million views on social media, over 730 million tags on TikTok and has managed to raise awareness of about 1,3 million signatures of Mexican citizens, who have signed the petition to say stop to cosmetic tests on animals.

I was happy to give my voice to Humane Society International's campaign to abolish animal testing for cosmetics - said American actress Rosario Dawson, who voiced one of the characters in the Spanish version of the short - and I couldn't be more. proud to see how #SaveRalph led Mexico to become the first North American country not to use cosmetics without cruelty.

The new bill was also welcomed by well-known cosmetic companies such as Lush, Unilever, P&G, L'Oréal, Avon which, together with Humane Society International, have joined the Animal-Free Safety Assessment (AFSA), a network of companies and organizations committed to the elimination of animal testing.

With Mexico, the number of countries in the world where animal testing in the cosmetic field is illegal rises to 41. Currently three other US states - New Jersey, Rhode Island and New York - are considering introducing such a ban.
