You have probably heard of hydroponics, also known as hydroculture, a soilless cultivation method in which the topsoil is replaced by an inert substrate, such as clay or zeolite. Earthworms are essential to create fertile soil in our gardens, they are a real natural plow and are indispensable for the home composting to be carried out thanks to a composer from balcony. In fact, vegetable food waste creates a ideal environment for earthworms, which reproduce rapidly and which within a few months transform the skins and cores into compost rich in nutrients.

An American expert thought of combining the use of earthworms with hydroponics. Professor And Rinaldo, director of the art and technology department of the Ohio State University School of Architecture thought earthworms might make the perfect contribution to vertical gardens to be dedicated to hydroponic cultivation.

He therefore brought together the two aspects in a single project, which bears the name of Cascading Gardens. Earthworms are perfect for fertilizing plants to grow, which will give rise to vegetables. For this new type of cultivation, special containers have been designed. Earthworms are the heart of the system and provide plants with all the nutrients they need.
