A farm in the province of Ravenna had a brilliant idea to clean up, at least in part, the environment. What does he do? He offers vegetables as a gift to those who bring him cigarette butts!
The Valle delle Apricocche, a Bagnacavallo farm in the Ravenna area, offers a really convenient and ecological exchange. So far, around 100 people have participated bringing collected cigarette butts around the streets and getting seasonal vegetables in exchange.
The initiative "5 kg of fruit and vegetables for a handful of butts", Launched in collaboration with the Cambiavento association of Imola, has now brought into the company as many as 40 kg of" butts "that otherwise would have remained abandoned in the streets and parks not only in the province of Ravenna but also in Rovigo, Bologna, Ferrara and Rimini (volunteers who collected cigarette scraps came from all these locations).
But there's more: the butts will have a second life thanks to a reuse artist, Matteo Zini, who will use a part of them to create works.
Bagnacavallo farmers are also starting a cigarette butts recycling project. As they write on their site:
“In the coming weeks we will carry out the hydrothermal carbonization test for which we will use the remaining kg of butts and those that you will continue to carry, because the harvest continues, just in anticipation of this second phase, for the entire month of January. For the 5 kg of fruit and vegetables we ask for a little more butts, at least half a kilo ”.
In short, from an operation launched almost for fun, something really important could be born to safeguard our environment and think if other farms would also take a cue ...
- Free beer for those who bring a glass full of cigarettes collected on the beach
- This São Paulo venue transforms cigarette butts into surfboards for children in need
- Free beer for every recycled plastic bottle on the canals of Milan
- Cigarette butts, in first place among ocean waste: they pollute more than plastic
