Vegetable fabrics similar to leather and cotton: the revolution for a cruelty free and green fashion starts from a mushroom

Vegetable fabrics similar to leather and cotton: the revolution for a cruelty free and green fashion starts from a mushroom

Not only vegetable fabrics similar to leather, but also other products such as cotton, can be made in an ecological and ethical way, as did this company which started from the fibers of a mushroom to create an alternative first of all to leather, but also to paper. Fashion is revolutionizing and this study proves it

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

At the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society, which is being held in these days, an international team from the Swedish university Högskolan i Borås, coordinated by researcher Akram Zamani, presented a very interesting new proposal to start a responsible production of cotton, similar synthetic fibers. to the skin that allows at the same time reduce the waste of raw materials and food. How? Starting from the filaments of the such mushrooms Rhizopus, the Rhizopus delemar.

Most of the species of these fungi are saprophytes, that is, they feed on dead organisms such as decomposing living beings, but not only. The team has in fact "fed the mushrooms" with del stale bread from a supermarket that would inevitably end up in the trash.

The bread was first completely dried, chopped in the form of breadcrumbs and mixed with a reactor. In the compound obtained, the researchers introduced the spores of Rhizopus delemar which took root perfectly, releasing after two days and a few operations a gelatinous residue made up of the fibrous cell walls that has been spun and that can be used for the production of materials similar to paper or animal skin.

This fungal-derived plant tissue could establish itself on the market, but researchers are now working on the strength and flexibility of the final product. To make their proposals as similar to animal skin as possible, the researchers used tree tannins, polyphenol compounds that naturally impart softness.

The team is now refining the developed materials, also testing other "mushroom foods" such as fruits and vegetables.

In no case was the use of chemicals harmful to the environment, such as synthetic polymers derived from petroleum, because the intent of the researchers is to propose valid natural and biodegradable alternatives that are an example of a greater environmental sustainability than an anti-waste solution. Combining the two is indeed possible, as this study has shown us.
