Up-Stream: the pedal washing machine made with recycled materials for only 4 dollars

Up-Stream, pedal washing machine. We are used to having drinking water and electricity at hand, frequently taking them for granted. In many countries of the world the opposite happens. Both the electricity network and the possibility of accessing drinking water are absent, making it impossible to have an electric washing machine similar to the household appliance present in our homes.

We are used to having on hand drinking water e electric current, frequently taking them for granted. In many countries of the world the opposite happens. Both the electricity network and the possibility of accessing drinking water are absent, making it impossible to have an electric washing machine similar to the household appliance present in our homes.

Here then are some projects for the construction of low cost washing machines which do not require the use of electric current for operation. We already told you about Spinner, the pedal washing machine costing only $ 40. Thanks to a new project, building such a washing machine can be even more affordable.

The trick is to employ recycled materials, which can allow you to make a pedal washing machine spending no more than 4 dollars, which at the current exchange rate correspond to only 3 euros. The new pedal washing machine was born thanks to the commitment of two industrial design students from Philadelphia University.

Aaron Stathum and Eliot Coven are the creators of a pedal washing machine prototype which, if produced industrially, would have a decidedly low cost. The invention is called Up-Stream, was made using exclusively recycled materials and it works thanks toenergia produced directly by man thanks to the movements of the body.

Up-Stream essentially consists of a bucket, a plastic cable, old pipes and a spool. The bucket features a rubber cover, which can be used to rub cloths on it, in order to better remove stains. To use it, it is necessary to place some cloths and soap in the bucket and add water.

The washing machine is operated using the feet, with movements that resemble a pedal stroke. There is the possibility to speed up the movements to perform a spin. Inventors recommend using natural soap or soap nuts for laundry. According to its creators, Up-Stream is a lot simple to assemble and repair and it could be of help in many cases to the populations of developing countries, and beyond.
