Two penguins of the same sex become parents after adopting an egg, a behavior that is not at all rare in nature.
Two penguins of the same sex adopted an egg and became its parents. It happened in Valencia, Spain, where two female penguins named Electra and Viola incubated another couple's egg.
A beautiful story, it is a pity that these are specimens locked up in captivity at the Oceanographic Aquarium.
It is not the first time that same-sex parents have raised a chick, also because in the world of birds the formation of same-sex pairs is common.
According to Petter Bockman, curator of an exhibition on homosexuality in the animal world, homosexual behaviors have been observed in about a thousand species. And as for penguins, enduring homosexual couples are far from rare in nature.
This was also demonstrated by a research conducted by a team of French and American scholars in 2010 on king penguins. The researchers found that same-sex courtship was common, especially among males. And it is not uncommon for such pairs to raise their young together.
The penguin chicks are always looked after by two parents and the incubation is carried out by both the mother and the father, or alternatively, as in this case, by two mothers who take turns to keep the egg warm.
We are sure they will be two exceptional parents, even if, like all other animals, they should be able to live free in nature!
