Trophy hunters pay up to € 40 to kill polar bears for "sport" (and are slaughtering them)

In recent years, the business of hunting polar bears that are increasingly threatened has grown: a practice that puts their survival at risk

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

They smile happily, with the rifle in their arms and with their victim in the foreground. In recent years, there are more and more photos of wealthy tourists who leave for real punitive expeditions against animals. We are used to seeing lions, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos as hunting trophies, but perhaps few people know that this sad phenomenon also affects polar bears.

Not only threatened by global warming that causes glacier melting, habitat loss and food shortages, polar bears are also prey to bored wealthy tourists who pump out their adrenaline by killing innocent animals. And to do so they go as far as Canada, Russia and the United States where in theory only the Inuit are allowed to shoot for the sole purpose of obtaining food and leather for clothes. Yet, while Norway is the only country to date to have banned the hunting of polar bears, in other areas, a sad business is taking place that sees the granting of licenses to hunting tour companies.

The polar bear is a coveted hunting trophy, having its fur or head indoors is a status symbol of well-being. It is almost equivalent to having a diamond. And indeed, tour operators like Worldwide Trophy Adventures o Ameri-Cana Expeditions they don't seem to have a problem finding the people interested. And the costs are staggering, up to 40 thousand euros for 10 days including the necessary equipment (tent, clothing, weapons, ammunition, food, etc.) and a guide to carry out this cruel activity. Attention, if in the first shipment you did not manage to kill the bear, there is a second free chance offered to the most loyal customers.

The description of the offer is detailed, with impressive phrases that even speak of sustainability.

“The Canadian Arctic is home to approximately 15.500 polar bears, two thirds of the world's population. Canada is a proven world leader in polar bear management, research, monitoring and conservation, and since 1975 the polar bear population has actually increased in Canada. The Canadian management system is designed to respond to the full range of threats to polar bears and their conservation, including climate change. "

Too bad, however, that the data tell us the opposite, namely that in recent years about 5 thousand specimens have disappeared and according to the WWF in the world there are between 20 thousand and 25 thousand polar bears. Other than redundancy: a rapidly dwindling population and their hunt for the sole purpose of obtaining a trophy, is a danger.

Behind it is a turnover of thousands of dollars. For example after the expedition, Ameri-Cana for example, offers its customers, heads and some bones of the slaughtered bears to a taxidermist who will transform them into real traditional hunting trophies or who will send parts of the animal's body to use in the Traditional Chinese Medicine.

“The polar bear is known to be in grave danger. If we want it to survive, we must stop this slaughter. The species is already facing climate change, pollution, the disappearance of its habitat and in reality it does not need an additional threat ”, says Eduardo Gonçalves, member of the Ban Trophy Hunting collective, which has been denouncing this massacre for years.
