A mobile and demountable cafeteria where everything is done with recycled plastic and cardboard bottles, except coffee. They made it 18 inventive students from Newcastle University, in England, who have collaborated with engineers and architects to spread environmental awareness among young designers and motivate them to use sustainable materials.

Is called Trash Coffee, that is the waste cafeteria, and is part of a project funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and designed by engineers Stephanie Glendinning and Mark Powell to encourage people to think and behave differently about the food and packaging it is packaged in.

With plastic bottle chairs, walls of cardboard boxes and aprons for baristas made from plastic bags, the cafe is all about upcycling and re-designing products that are destined to be completely recycled and rethought for a new life after their first use.

“Upcycling is about taking materials that would normally be considered waste and turning them into something of value…. plastic bottles, cartons and other packaging, once considered worthless, they can reacquire it if people identify a range of creative possibilities in these components ", explains Powell.

And what better place to talk about the creative recycling and the importance of proper waste management if not a coffee, the place for conversation par excellence? At the Trash Cafè, on the Newcastle University campus, visitors will now be able to enjoy a good cup of coffee and experience first-hand what can be made with a little ingenuity from what is commonly discarded. But be careful: lhe cafeteria could be dismantled and moved to another location.
