Smart glasses, made with new ones ultra-clear solar cells, which allow you to produce energy and recharge small electronic devices.

To develop these new ones "smart" windowsfrom thin and transparent solar glasses (just like traditional windows) and capable of capturing the sun's energy were the UCLA researchers, University of California Los Angeles, in collaboration with colleagues from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, whose study was also published in the journal di ACS Nano.

These special windows are characterized by special glasses, made of polymeric solar cells (more common as PSC) built with a material very similar to plastic, able to absorb mainly the infrared rays of solar radiation. In fact, these compounds do not absorb visible sunlight, which is why they are “only” 70% transparent to the human eye.

In addition, the special windows are also equipped with special transparent conductors, composed of silver nano-wires and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, used in place of the traditional metallic and opaque electrodes.

"These results make us think that our transparent polymeric solar cells can be used in portable electronic devices, or on smart windows and integrated photovoltaics in buildings - commented study coordinator Yang Yang - Our new cells - he adds - are made with materials similar to plastic, they are light, flexible and above all they can be produced on a large scale at low costs ".

In practice, these particular windows can be normally mounted in houses to generate electricity obtained from the sun, because - thanks to their transparency - they work just like normal glass, which you can look through.

Until today the problem of solar cells was right in the transparency, indeed very difficult to obtain, but the scientists finally succeeded in the feat, obtaining high-performance transparent solar cells and low costs.
