Wooden escalators, an intertwining formed by two "branches" that touch each other. This particular structure was designed by artist Chris Fox, who was given the task of repurposing two pairs of wooden escalators installed for the first time in Wynyard station in Sydney in 1931.

For over 80 years, escalators have transported Australian citizens and tourists to a symbol of the city's identity. Fox's solution is called Interloop, a twisted ribbon similar to an accordion now suspended from the ceiling of the station.

A huge staircase, much more pleasant than the gray ones we are used to in our cities. Formed by 244 wooden steps, the pair of escalators evokes the past, proposing it again with a design that recalls the otherworldly, an upward ascent that seems to go beyond the boundaries of the building. Everything was made using natural materials such as wood.

The new creation therefore pays homage to the hardworking ed ancient stairs furnishings which for decades carried commuters and instead of getting rid of them, the city found a way to reuse the wooden steps, weighing a total of 5 tons.

In the past, the stairs were mainly used by traders from Sydney The artist wanted to work on the idea that even if people stood still on the escalators, the escalators took them into a different atmosphere, a real journey that also offers a moment of pause in the daily grind.

“A milestone for Sydney which put the great sculptural project into operation. Interloop is of great importance because it helps to maintain and celebrate the historical identity of the city, while also trying to look towards its own future, ”explains Chris Fox.
