Towels and tea towels: the dirtiest items in the house, here's how and how much to wash them

Experts from the University of Arizona analyzed towels and dishcloths, finding that many bacteria (including E. Coli) lurk in them (89% of cases) that can cause food poisoning, diarrhea and more.

We used to think that most of the bacteria in the home lurk on door handles or inside the toilet, in fact some researchers have disproved this myth by analyzing instead tea towels and towels and discovering that in reality it is these objects most infested with germs.

Experts from the University of Arizona found bacteria that can cause disease in 89% of towels (it was Escherichia Coli in 26% of cases).

The main problem is that the towels and tea towels that are used in the kitchen retain moisture and so allow better reproduction for bacteria. Furthermore, by using them in delicate areas of the body such as the face and private parts, microorganisms are more easily able to enter the body.

Thanks to these commonly used objects, by the way, bacteria would be able to also spread to other areas of the house and cause food poisoning, diarrhea or other health problems in those who come into contact with it. In some cases, the same towels are used in the family, in this way the contamination from one person to another is obviously even easier.

For the kitchen towels the problem is very similar also because they are often used to dry clean dishes after having already been used for other purposes, perhaps even on dirty surfaces.

Researchers advise, to get rid of germs for sure, from:

    - carry out frequent washing (at least once a week but better every 3/4 days) to towels and tea towels a 90%, in fact, at lower temperatures the bacteria could survive. Furthermore, in the case of towels it would always be good to use your own, especially if at that moment you are suffering from some disease.

    - After washing, let it dry very well to avoid the formation of mold.

    - Use vinegar instead of fabric softener to remove odors and keep towels absorbent.

    - To extend the time between washes, you can soak the kitchen towels in a solution of diluted bleach (two teaspoons of bleach per liter of water), leave them to soak for a few minutes and then put them to dry. To avoid bleach you could instead use some natural disinfectants, you can find out which are the most effective HERE.
