Tires: 5 ideas to recycle them in a creative way

According to some sources, more than 2 million tons of end-of-life tires are thrown away every year in Europe alone, which translate into rubber to be recovered: in some cases they are shredded and reduced to powder to be combined with the bituminous compounds intended for the construction of roads, in others they are used to build infrastructures and sports fields, but in many cases - even today - they are burned.

Once its primary function is finished, despite modern recovery techniques, the tyres inevitably become waste to be disposed of.

According to some sources, only in Europe More than 2 million tons of end-of-life tires are thrown away every year, which translate into rubber to be recovered: in some cases they are shredded and reduced to powder to be combined with the bituminous compounds intended for the construction of the roads, in others they are used to build infrastructures and sports fields, but in many cases - even today - they are burned.

In fact, to reduce the environmental impact given by the disposal of our old tires it takes very little! Eco-friendly paints, double-sided tape and a few do-it-yourself tools are enough and the old black rubber becomes a cute pouf to furnish a living room or a room, one sgabello vintagand to put on the terrace or in the garden, one colorful planter in which to arrange plants or a kennel where our beloved dog can sleep!

Creatively reclaiming an old tire it is not only an act of responsibility and attention to the environment, but also an opportunity to stimulate our imagination and get closer to manual activities, too often mistreated.

Transforming the tires into a modern ottoman

Before starting to make our pouf, it is good to obtain and have all the tools necessary for the job available: 2 tires, colored paint, double-sided adhesive and a toolbox containing nails, hammer, drill, long screws, metal washers, dice, universal glue, stapler, thick and soft fabrics, a circle of plywood with a diameter of about 36 cm and a thickness of 1 cm, a circle of foam rubber (always with a diameter of about 36 cm and a thickness of 1 cm) and another rather thin wooden circle, with a diameter of 40 cm.

Once you have recovered all the work tools, settle on the balcony, on your terrace or in a special room, where you normally dedicate yourself to manual work (better if you can have a garden) and make sure that the time is suitable for carrying out work. this guy without disturbing the neighbors.

1) First of all, you will have to wash the two tires thoroughly (better if the action of water combined with that of sodium bicarbonate, which cleans, degreases and disinfects), then arrange the two tires one on top of the other, make holes with the drill and fix the two wheels with long screws stops by nuts: you will have to fix the screws starting them from the bottom wheel and stop them in the top wheel.

2) At this point you will have created it supporting skeleton of your pouf; now all that remains is to color it and dress it up!

With the color you prefer and that best suits the environment in which to put your pouf, paint the outer surface of the tires (for a more cheerful and youthful effect, you can also decide to color the two wheels with different shades), let it dry completely (it will take a few hours) and repeat the operation to guarantee the pouf a stable color over time.

3) Once this is done, all that remains is dress it up and complete the seat! Cut the plywood with a hacksaw and form a circle with a diameter of 36 cm (to make your life easier, you can commission this operation directly to the DIY store you buy), glue it to the foam rubber circle and press them well so that they adhere, then coat the pillow obtained with the fabric of your choice (always helping you with universal glue or a stitch shooter).

4) At this point iGlue the lined cushion to the circle of slightly larger wood, put some universal contact glue (or double-sided adhesive) on the latter and place it, pressing well, in the center of the upper tire: your pouf is ready!

build a coffee table, just follow the same procedure indicated for the creation of a pouf and vary only the last phases: instead of the cushion you can use a round mirror, a wooden circle covered with fabric, or painted and decorated with the découpage technique, and glue it ( always with universal glue or shoot points) to the tire structure.

Also to make cute planters for your plants you can follow the first steps indicated for the construction of the pouf: wash the tires, join them together with screws and paint them as you prefer.

Once the supporting structure has been created, take a plywood circle with a diameter of 35,5 / 36 cm and 3-4 mm thick and with the help of the universal glue attach it to the center of the upper wheel, as if it were a hat, make it adhere well , then turn your planter upside down so that the plywood top rests on the ground.

At this point, you can fill the inside of the structure with the most suitable soil and plant your favorite flowers! This is what some volunteers from Naples are doing these days to make the city more liveable starting from tires. Look a bit:
