Abuse, mistreatment and illegal trade of wild species. It had been happening for years inside the Tiger temple of Kanchanaburi, Thailand, where tourists were allowed to shoot selfie scopes with the recluse tigers, feed them and even meditate in the company of their cubs. After years of protests, the tigers will finally be moved from the Buddhist temple thanks to a government decision.

For this every year hundreds and hundreds of foreign travelers flocked for the chance to see tigers up close of Tiger Temple and "interact" with them. Tiger Temple's success has always been based on the fact that its tigers were rescued by poachers to live and move freely and peacefully among the temple's monks, actively engaged in the conservation work of the species.

Too bad there was never any evidence that donations and paid tickets were donated to this cause. The first perplexity in this regard stems from the fact that tigers are raised by monks, not by wildlife experts or conservationists. Not to mention the terrible conditions in which animals are forced to live.

Too small and crowded cages devoid of any enrichment in which the tigers spent 20-21 hours a day. Specimens with repetitive behaviors due to captive stress. The felines were forced to interact with hosts for about three hours at a time in direct sunlight, without shade and water. Physical abuse and mistreatment to make tigers more collaborative with humans and teach them to be submissive to keepers.

Pull by the tail, hit with small rods, unnerved by the tourists made to sit on their backs and always too close, with no space in which to shelter. Feed only chicken, because it is cheaper. Strangely apathetic and calm, maybe sedate. In nature, then, adult tigers tend to live solitary, meeting only to mate or when the cubs are too small to live alone. But up to 90 tigers were housed at the Tiger Temple at one time.

But now, following a series of dramatic events, including attacks on guests, Nipon Chotiban, director general of Thailand's National Parks Department, has finally ordered and all tigers are relocated from the facility by the end of April. This is great news for wildlife conservationists and animal rights activists who have been fighting for over 15 years to close this temple of horrors. And especially for the tigers, who have the right to be free from exploitation.
