Thus global warming is also extinguishing the Emperor Penguin

The future of the emperor penguin is at stake. Climate change is the main cause that threatens this species.

The future of the emperor penguin is at risk and climate change, in particular the melting of sea ice, is responsible. This is why scientists from the US Fisheries and Wildlife Service have decided to propose this penguin as a species threatened by extinction.

An international report has studied what the fate of this animal could be, in relation to the melting of ice due to greenhouse gas emissions.

There are currently around 61 emperor penguin colonies along the coast of Antarctica, that is 650.000 birds. However, according to surveys, the population could decline between 26% and 47% by 2050, if the Paris Accords are respected.

Emperor penguins need sea ice to form breeding colonies, forage for food, and to avoid being preyed upon. As carbon dioxide emissions rise, the Earth's temperature is continuing to rise, causing large patches of sea ice to melt.

The decisions made by politicians today and in the coming decades will determine the fate of the emperor penguin

said Martha Williams, deputy principal director of the US Conserving the Nature of America.

These penguins depend on the Antarctic ice sheet for every aspect of their existence. When it dwindles due to rising temperatures, their life becomes difficult: the journeys to look for food become longer and more tiring and there are no more shelters from predators.

The Emperor Penguin is essential to the ecosystem. From the point of view of the food chain, they feed on krill, small fish, crustaceans and represent an important source of sustenance for killer whales and leopard seals.
