Heavy and irregular rains in recent weeks have flooded over 33.000 hectares of agricultural land for the third time in just nine months.

Since the end of June, more than 40 villages in southwestern Somalia, home to thousands of children, have been inundated. According to the United Nations, around 15.000 people in the Shabelle region alone were displaced on July 14 and 15, when the area was hit by water.

“We are extremely concerned about the situation in Hirshabele and in the Southwestern states, where families and children face hunger, with the risk of malnutrition rates soaring. Recurrent and irregular floods affecting these regions have caused crop failure, seriously jeopardizing the production of sufficient nutritious food for children. Floods and calm waters are also a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, which raises concerns about possible malaria outbreaks. To the pre-existing crisis in Somalia, between food insecurity, child malnutrition, conflicts and swarms of locusts, are added the floods that are putting the lives of children at risk. Additional resources are needed to address this crisis, ”said Mohamud Mohamed Hassan, Director of Save the Children in Somalia.

This is having a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of minors, invisible to the world once again.

And on the other hand, the coronavirus is also knocking on Africa's doors.
