A Jack Russell specimen named Patron received a medal from President Zelensky for smelling dozens of explosive devices in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The dog was invited to take part in an official ceremony held in Kiev in recent days
Patron, this is the name of the 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier who was awarded an honor by the President of Ukraine himself Volodymyr Zelensky. Together with his owner Mykhailo Iliev, the dog received a medal for his commendable military service for his country on Sunday 8 May.
In the course of the war between Russia and Ukraine the dog has indeed given a enormous contribution in saving countless human and non human lives, sniffing out bombs and other explosive devices and allowing the military to defuse them.
The Jack Russell has received specific training from military dog groups. Dogs are in fact taught to search for weapons and ammunition and to report the presence of explosives on the battlefield. A very risky task no doubt .
Patron, whose name actually means "ammunition" in Ukrainian, is a true hero even if he certainly did not choose to become one and does not need a medal to prove his worth. However, the dog received the praise, making its entrance in Kiev wagging its tail among journalists and photographers.
The ceremony was held in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visiting Kiev who congratulated Patron and his host.
I want to reward the Ukrainian heroes who are clearing our land of mines. And together with our heroes a wonderful little genius, Patron, who helps not only neutralize explosives, but also teach our children the safety rules. These are necessary in areas where the threat of mines is present,
Zelensky said during the ceremony.
