This is the secret to making the best coffee in the world (and it has to do with bees and birds)

According to new research, the quality of the coffee, its taste, the size of the bean and the aroma depend on the work of nature. More precisely, the researchers found that coffee tastes better thanks to the action of bees and birds.

A new study has found that coffee beans are larger and more abundant when birds and api they come together to protect and pollinate plants.

Without these birds, in fact, coffee growers would see a 25% drop in yields.

An important element for a sector that produces about 23 billion euros, including consumers, farmers and companies that depend on the "work" that nature does.

This research is the first to demonstrate, using real-world experiments on 30 coffee crops, that the contributions of nature, in this case thepollination of bees and pest control by birds are really critical to agriculture.

The findings suggest that past assessments may indeed underestimate the benefits of biodiversity offers agriculture and human well-being. (Read also:  Wild coffee, rare and forgotten, which can save the beloved drink from the climate crisis)

A systematic review

For the experiment, researchers from Latin America and the United States manipulated coffee plants on 30 farms, with a combination of large nets and small lace sacks.

They tested four key scenarios: bird activity (pest control), bee activity (pollination), no bird and bee activity, and finally a natural environment, where bees and birds were free to pollinate. and eat insects like the coffee borer, one of the most harmful parasites affecting manufacturing worldwide.

The study shows that the combined positive effects of birds and bees on fruit set, i.e. the initial stage of fruit development after flowering, on fruit weight and uniformity, key factors in terms of quality and price, were greater than their individual effects.

Thus, without birds and bees, the average yield decreased by almost 25%.

The researchers pointed out that:

An important reason we measure these contributions is to help protect and conserve the many species we depend on, and sometimes take for granted. Birds, bees and millions of other species support our lives and livelihoods, but face threats such as habitat destruction and climate change.

The team is also studying how changing farm landscapes affect the ability of birds and bees to benefit coffee production.
