Here are some tips to avoid unnecessary risks associated with fires that frequently occur during the Christmas period

We are in December, there are just a few weeks before Christmas and shops and shop windows are already teeming with fir trees, colored lights and sparkling decorations. Someone will still be waiting for the traditional day of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) to decorate their home, while many people have already been busy setting up the tree, hanging balls and garlands, preparing the typical and fragrant sweets of the holidays. However, you must be very careful when turning on series of lights in the apartment, to decorate the tree or the fireplace: in fact, most of the house fires that occur during the holidays are caused by faulty electrical devices. Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing the tree and decorations, to live a Christmas in safety.

    • If we have chosen to welcome in the house a real fir to brighten our holidays, let's take care to choose a tree that does not lose many needles, and place it far from any heat source (radiators, fireplaces, stoves, lamps, candles ...): on the one hand, we will protect the health of the fir tree, which prefers cold environments; on the other hand, we will prevent the risk of it catching fire. Also, let's check that it is not already dry at the time of purchase, but that the needles are green and florid, and remember to water it a little every day: a dry tree takes much less time to start a fire in the house. If instead we preferred a synthetic tree, make sure it is self-extinguishing (the package should say fireproof or non-flammable).
    • Even the choice of the electric light system must be carried out with care: let's make sure it has CE certification, that it is in good condition (with no worn or exposed cables or non-working light bulbs) and we read the instructions carefully before proceeding to decorate the tree. It is not wise to think of saving a few euros by buying poor quality lights, if in this way we endanger our lives. Furthermore, it is very important to unplug the system before going to sleep or when we are not at home: in this way we will avoid unnecessary risks. We also prefer light chains powered by a transformer: in this way we will avoid overheating of the individual bulbs that could give life to the fire.
    • Avoid multiple sockets to connect several series of lights to a single socket: it is better to invest a few euros in the purchase of a "power strip" to distribute the various sockets in a safer way (also in this case, we strongly suggest the purchase of a quality product with the CE safety mark).
    • To illuminate balconies and terraces, use specific light chains for outdoors - that is, which can withstand rain and bad weather without short-circuiting - which are low voltage and powered by a transformer.
    • Finally, also pay attention to non-electric decorations. From absolutely avoid candles for decoration of the tree, since a minimum displacement of air is enough for the whole fir to catch fire. Also choose balls and light decorations (especially if you have chosen a real tree, so that its branches do not get too tired) and possibly of good quality,
