A video that is the result of our single-use plastic culture. The footage was made public by Parley, a team of environmentalists committed to cleaning up the coast of the Dominican Republic.

Plastic waste, including mixed bottles and take-out boxes, is seen rolling along the beach waves.

“In the past we have sent postcards with magical beaches and palm trees. Now, it's waves of plastic waste. Unless we all take action, future generations won't even believe postcard scenes ever existed. We are calling for a global effort, plastics must go away, ”says Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley.

The activist group has been working alongside the local navy, military and city council for years to clean up plastic waste. More than 500 public workers have been recruited for the operation. In just three days of work, they were harvested thirty tons of plastic, although Parley believes there is still a lot of work to be done to get rid of all the waste.

Six tons of plastic were instead recovered and transformed into Ocean Plastic®, a material used to create alternative products to single-use plastics.

“Seeing this show firsthand is absolutely shocking, but the worst part is that this is nothing new in Santo Domingo. This situation happens whenever it rains heavily, ”explains Carmen Danae Chamorro of Parley.

A global pollution

In 35 years, the oceans could contain even more plastic bottles than fish. The alarm is raised by a study entitled "The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics", carried out by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. In short, a sea of garbage that will flood the Earth and will not give a future to the food chains of the oceans around the world, which have long been at risk of collapse due to greenhouse gas emissions, intensive fishing and localized pollution.
