Here are some home tricks to keep the washing machine tray clean and sanitized, to avoid the formation of mold and bad smell

The washing machine is a very useful tool to make our clothes clean, sanitized and fragrant. But what happens if it gets dirty? Being in contact with water, it is not uncommon for molds to form inside it and therefore bacteria can proliferate which, in addition to being a vehicle for infections or allergies, often cause bad odors even on our clothes. Among the components of the washing machine that are most affected by stagnation of water and humidity, there is certainly the detergent compartment: it is a piece made of hard plastic that often has encrustations or mold due to the detergent deposits that accumulate in it or the water that stagnates inside it.

How to clean it better and prevent it from giving off a bad smell? Here are some "grandmother's remedies" to take care of this part of our appliance too, eliminating mold and bacteria. Before proceeding with cleaning, it is important to remove the tray from our washing machine, after having disconnected the appliance from the power supply.

    • Hydrogen peroxide. If the tray has small stains and localized dirt, in this case we can use cotton balls that we will soak with hydrogen peroxide and that we will position in correspondence with the parts to be cleaned. It will be necessary to let the product act on the stains for a couple of minutes, before proceeding with cleaning the whole tray.
    • Citric acid. It is easily found in home goods stores and comes in the form of granules. Just add 200 grams to a liter of water and use the solution obtained to clean our tray, with the help of a soft cloth. The acid is a powerful descaler that will eliminate stubborn dirt and encrustations.
    • Baking soda. After leaving the tray to soak in a basin of hot water for a few minutes, so that the dirt can soften, let's take it out of the water and sprinkle it inside with bicarbonate, then brush off the stains and dust with an old toothbrush (we can also use a nail brush, if we find it more comfortable to handle). Bicarbonate, in addition to acting as a limescale eater, is also a whitener, and will restore some of its original splendor to our tray.

We do not recommend using a solution of water and vinegar instead: although it can be effective as an anti-limescale and to remove detergent residues, vinegar, diluted with water, represents a great source of water pollution which would be best avoided.
