This 92-year-old granny teaches us how to turn plastic waste collected on the street into bags, cosmetic bags and coasters

After seeing the work of this 92-year-old Indian granny, you too will want to try recycling plastic.

Much of the plastic we use makes only a fleeting passage in our homes, but a prolonged and atrocious stop in the environment. Janaki Viswam, a 92-year-old Indian artisan living in Chennai, teaches us how to recycle our plastic waste, crochet it and turn it into beautiful products for everyday use.

It all began in 2019, when Tamil Nadu, the Indian state where it resides, introduced a ban on single-use plastics. Janaki started thinking about how to recycle existing plastic bags at home and with the help of her daughter-in-law, she started watching tutorials on Youtube. Since then no one has stopped her.

With great care and patience, Janaki collects the plastic, cuts it into strips to obtain some kind of ribbons, which then easily weaves like a filament, to make them perfectly suitable for crocheting. From luggage labels to original coasters and mats, from elegant cosmetic bags and comfortable bags in the name of upcycling and the environment, there are several products that this exemplary craftswoman creates by recycling plastic.

Its purpose is not to make an economic profit, in fact it donates all its creations to anyone who comes to visit it. Thus, in addition to contributing with her grain of sand to take care of the environment, she gives art and environmental awareness, also gaining health and well-being.

I am profitably engaged and my mind does not wander into useless things. It also helps me maintain my cognitive abilities. What else can I ask for at this age? " said the Indian artisan to a local medium.

Her whole family is proud of the home artist, they admire her for her strength, her patience and the environmental wisdom she practices every day and describes her as a source of inspiration. Of all, grandchildren are Grandma Janaki's number one fans.

I have always been the first fan of my maternal paati (grandmother). We're lucky we don't need to look too far for the living legends that anchor and guide us! ”, Reads a post by Charitra Parthasarathy, the 92-year-old's granddaughter.
