    It is the largest forest of giant sequoias in the world and now Alder Creek has become a protected reserve thanks to crowdfunding. An environmental group has, in fact, concluded a 15,65 million dollar agreement to buy the ancient forest (still in private hands) which has hundreds of trees in danger of extinction after donations from all over the world.





    Trees that, as stated on the Save the redwoods website, can live up to 3 thousand years and even become as tall as the Statue of Liberty. Alder Creek spans 530 acres of 483 redwoods with trunks at least 180 centimeters wide, as well as some very young specimens.

    “The giant sequoia is among the largest and oldest living things and does not grow anywhere else in the world outside the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in California. By purchasing Alder Creek, we have protected the best of what's left, ”said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League.

    The negotiations had been going on for years, but finally the Save the Redwoods League signed the purchase agreement with the Rouch family, owner of the forest since the 40s. The extraordinary thing is that the 15 million dollars requested were donations from over 8500 donors. from 50 American states and beyond.

    “We are amazed and grateful for the generosity of people from all over the world who have come forward to help save this special forest. At a time when good news is hard to find, we are thrilled to start the new year by celebrating generosity, ”Hodder said.


    Now the next step is to nominate the forest as a national monument.
